Dreams

Dreams

If you have a dream in life
If you strive for success in what you do
Sometimes the biggest obstacle
to achieving what you want to is you

Sometimes you fear that you’re not good enough
to ever be successful
Sometimes you fear success
will tear you away from your loved ones
Sometimes you fear you’re too messed up
to be ever be successful
Sometimes you fear if you find success
everyone will be out to get you

Remember success is not about
writing a perfect book
painting a perfect painting
singing a perfect song
or making a lot of money
What success is really about
is taking your life by the hand
and walking into a bright new day
Where what you believe in
is you

Change

Change

Since the world long ago began
change rules all
and the only thing that doesn’t change
is that the world is forever changing.
Societies and people both
are born very small
changing after a little while into a teen.
Still later change turns us each into an adult.
Time goes on and one day
we find we are older and perhaps a bit wiser.
There we spend many years in our prime
till one day we wake
in the twilight of our life.
Change walks with us all of our lives
It’s only natural.
The way things should be.
Still, some things never change
because since time began
all creatures walk the same path
from babe to adult to twilight to death.

Some things you can be sure of—-
Lotta times we change
in order to remain true to ourselves.
There is a lot of sense to the idea
that we all change to remain the same.
Change can cause you to grow older and wiser
or just grow old
and the right to decide
which it’s going to be
is a power each of us has
that cannot be taken away.

Remember
change happening too fast
to both societies and individuals
is always accompanied by turmoil.
Slower change is called evolution
and usually is better.
Changing too slowly is what we call stagnation.
And a golden age
is what we call a big change
at a perfect pace.

Dear God

Dear God

Dear God,
As you know, I’ve never really prayed much
And probably won’t start anytime soon.
I have wondered all my life
If you exist
And to this day
I still don’t know with any great certainty
That you do or don’t.
But fifty years and a few long, long roads
Have taught me one thing for sure
If you don’t exist, you should.
And as the days roll on by
Both reason and emotion
Raise further for me
The likelihood that you do.

Just in case you do exist
I’d like to say
Thank you very much
For my life
And for the lives
Of my lady and our kids
I suspect all the religions
Are right about one notion—
Not even the smallest sparrow
Spreads a wing in joy or sorrow
Without you knowing.

And I’ll tell you one more thing,
You certainly evolved
A whole lots of things extremely well
But I especially like
Those dogs and cats.

Goals

Goals

It’s not the goal that’s important
but the journey there
It’s not how far you get
down a road in life
but only what roads you travel
and who you meet along the way.
The journey
to success in life
is always worth more,
than the destination.

Same Old New

Same Old New

Love in each of us
Caution in all
Connection and detachment
In everyone
A brotherhood of humanity
Full of individuals
Intelligence in all of us
Idiocy too
Every upside
Has a downside
The fleas always come
With the dog

I’ve seen the love in someone
Appear at just the right moment
And save everything for them
Possibly worth saving
I’ve also seen the love in someone
Maim the people they most care for
As it blinded them
Into becoming a fool
I’ve seen fear eat people alive
As it destroyed
What was in their heart
So too I’ve seen the fear in someone
Save them from great harm
When at the right moment
They heeded caution

Even the best runners
Trip and fall
Every once in awhile
And the slowest among us
Can be quick to learn
Even the smartest of us
Have found themselves
Acting like an idiot
A time or two

Impermanence
Is mostly permanent
Every day I awake
And look in the mirror
To find the same old
Someone new
Every morning
I look out the window
To find a new world
Full of the same old change
Every day it’s the same—
I learn something new
